Essential Information For Choosing Colored Diamonds

Color Treated Diamonds

Many individuals are starting to prefer the extravagant, vivid tinted diamond gem stones over the customary transparent, or white, diamonds. Quite a few gemstones are uncovered in their natural colors when they are mined, others can be tinted by gemologists and jewelers during a treatment process. As a way to make them less expensive for the average buyer, specialists have begun synthetically treating gems of lower grades in order to take a less attractive yellow or brownish colored gem and make it into a eye-catching, brightly colored diamond.

Colored diamonds are treated by the procedure known as irradiation, which uses a very high heat system to alter the color of a stone. Some other jewels are treated by just painting.

The Natural Range of Fancy Color

Even though precious gems will be graded and valued depending on their clear attributes, there are individuals who prefer the fancy colored diamonds which come in vibrant shades of greens, yellows, reddish, pinks along with all the different shades in between.

As mentioned previously, there are those stones with naturally occurring color. If a diamond has nitrogen in it, it often has a yellow tint to the stone. If the gemstone has been effected by radiation, the gem may turn green.

For those with a smaller budget who would not ordinarily be able to afford a fancy gem, can now do so with treated diamonds which are a very attractive option. Gemologists have found ways to alter the colors of diamonds to get any shade or hue desired. The grading process for colored diamonds is slightly different than that of the transparent diamond. The first part of the color grading process is the identifiaction of the primary color range, eg blue, pink etc.. Secondly, they are graded based on the intensity of that color. A very intense, naturally colored diamond is more rare than a less intense diamond, and therefore more expensive. A treated diamond will cost less than a naturally colored diamond in most instances.

Man Made Diamonds

In general, most diamonds are found in the earth, in mines and extracted by miners , However, it is quite possible for the diamond to be created by a scientific process. A synthetic version is still a real diamond, just created in a lab instead of the earth, and, of course, are much less valuable.

Names of The Colors

Due to the fact fancy colored diamonds come in many shades, it can sometimes be difficult to interpret the naming of the diamonds color. Often, you’ll find two colors labeling the shade of a diamond, such as greenish blue. Each name has a primary color description, and some have a secondary color description. If another color is mentioned with an ‘ish’, that would be the secondary color. Some stones have equal parts of color such as red/ brown. There is no secondary color just a perfect half and half of each. .

A popular trend today is to opt for yellow diamond engagement rings, from the range of canary yellow diamonds and other fancy yellow diamonds.
